P.W May Contracting is an agricultural contracting company, specialising in providing grassland management services to the agricultural, equestrian and amenity industries. Using high quality modern equipment, in addition to our highly skilled staff, we strive to provide the reliable and superior service that our customers deserve.
We provide advice on grassland management, as well as all of the practical services that it brings with it. We undertake a visit to each prospective customer, in order to tailor our services to their specific requirements. Whether you are in need of a full management programme or just a one off task, we can assist you.
We are covered with fully comprehensive business and vehicle insurance, £5 million Public Liability Insurance and £10 million Employers Liability Insurance, ensuring that we can provide all of our clients with full peace of mind.
PADDOCK MAINTENANCE AND EQUESTRIAN SERVICES
We undertake a complete paddock maintenance service including:
- Harrowing
- Fertiliser Spreading
- Spraying – using a variety of equipment, from a knapsack sprayer or a quad bike with 3.5 metre boom for small areas, to a 24 metre trailed sprayer for much larger areas
- Topping
- Reseeding/Overseeding
- Flat Rolling
- Hedge Cutting
We can provide one off tasks, as well as providing a complete management programme, tailored to your specific requirements for your land, soil type and budget.
MUCK REMOVAL
In addition to the grassland services, we also provide a cost effective and efficient muck removal service. We use a large 25 cubic metre trailer (over twice the size of a standard grab lorry) to clear any type of bedding, from straw and shavings, to Aubiose and Hemcore and all other types of bedding in between! Depending upon the frequency of removal, prices start from as little as £60.00/load and we can undertake one off collections, right through collections once per week, depending upon your requirements. This means we can cater for the smaller horse owner, right up to the largest livery yards, stud farms and equestrian centres.
VEGETATION CLEARANCE SERVICES
Any type of overgrown field, hedgerow or scrubland area can be cleared, using a number of different methods. Brambles, hawthorn, blackthorn, fallen branches, overhanging branches – you name it and we can usually clear it! Using our 6 metre reach heavy duty flail hedgecutter, combined with our front mounted heavy duty flail mower, chainsaws and a 6" capacity wood chipper, this enables us to provide an extremely cost effective and efficient service. Our staff are fully qualified and proficient in the use of chainsaws and all associated equipment.
For larger areas, we use a tri-saw blade mounted on a hedgecutter, working together with a tractor and front end loader with grab and a 360 excavator. This enables us to provide a quick, efficient and cost effective service to those looking to clear larger areas of land. We can then provide a complete re-seeding service to bring the land back into commercial use once again.
In addition to these services, we are also able to provide a comprehensive ditch and pond clearance service.

We can supply and erect all types of fencing and gates including:
- Post and rail

NEW DEVELOPMENTS
We are constantly looking for new and innovative services to offer to our clients and this year, we have begun to offer a GPS Nutrient Mapping and soil sampling service, in conjunction with Keith Mount Liming. Fields are measured and mapped, using a quad bike with a GPS receiver. Plots are marked by the GPS receiver and then navigated to (which represent approximately 1 hectare), where 16 samples of soil are collected from each plot.
Samples are then sent off to a laboratory, where they are analysed for P, K, Mg and pH. The information collected is then transferred into nutrient maps, showing the differing nutrient levels in each sampled field, in addition to the alkalinity and acidity. Each field will have an individual nutrient map for P, K, Mg and pH, showing the particular areas that are requiring fertiliser and those areas that do not. In addition to the nutrient maps, a four year management plan will be created for each field, using information obtained from the client, with regards to soil type, cropping, any organic manures that have or will be applied and whether straw is removed or chopped.
These maps can be used by the client to enable them to spread their fertiliser products, only in the areas that require them. Alternatively if the client has their own variable rate fertiliser spreader, the nutrient maps can be transferred onto the required hardware, which can then be used by the client to undertake their own variable rate applications.
Major benefits gained from this type of sampling, include reducing input costs and increasing profitability, by only applying fertiliser and lime where it is needed, rather than in blanket applications. Customers find that they are receiving typical cost savings of up to 30% on their fertiliser bills.

ABOUT US
P.W. May Contracting has been trading since April 2005 and is based at Eastwick Hall Farm, which is just outside the village of Eastwick, near Harlow on the Essex/Hertfordshire border. The company was established by Peter May, when he saw a niche in the market for a contractor providing services to the equestrian industry. From small beginnings providing a paddock topping service to local clients, the company now undertakes a wide range of services for over 130 satisfied clients covering over 1,300 acres of horse paddocks and grass areas, within a 30 mile radius of their base.
The size of the job is not important and each customer is treated equally, which we feel is essential to the success of the company. This is shown by the diversity of our clients, who range from equestrian centres and livery yard owners, to farmers, parish councils and private land owners. Not only do we undertake our own work, but we are also employed by other local contractors, to assist with their work. Tasks undertaken for them include flail mowing, tractor and driver hire and specialist ATV spraying, which involves us spraying such varied areas from cover crops and deer parks, to Elstree and Panshanger Aerodromes!
"We aim to provide a reliable, cost effective and professional service to all our clients. My three staff are polite and professional about their work, and all machinery is signwritten and cleaned regularly, as I feel that first impressions are very important.
